Melamine is an organic chemical that forms a white powder. This is usually turned into melamine plastic, a polymer of melamine and formaldehyde, before it is used as a resin.
Characteristic
Melamine laminate is a protective, heat- and scratch-resistant covering for furniture and other surfaces.
Production
Melamine laminate is produced by impregnating layers of kraft paper (i.e. a strong paper or cardboard) with a melamine resin and attaching it to a wooden base. High pressure laminates (HPL) are produced under pressures of 70 to 100 bars and temperatures of 140 to 160 degrees Celsius. They are glued onto the wood. Low pressure laminates (LPL) are fused to the wood without any adhesive, under pressures of 20 to 30 bars and temperatures of 170 to 190 degrees Celsius.
Features
Melamine laminate is a tough material that is resistant to heat, moisture and chemicals. It does not scratch easily, and it is a flame retardant. Melamine laminate also has antibacterial properties, making it a hygienic material for use in the kitchen.
Types
HPLs are more durable and resistant to chemicals and heat. LPLs are cheaper.
Function
Melamine laminate is used as a protective covering for furniture, countertops and floors.
