Fresh paint Over Water Marks On Sheetrock

Apply a stain blocker before repainting your wall.

Although virtually clear, water contains minerals that can stain and discolor walls and ceilings. Caused by a leaky roof, a dripping water line or even heavy condensation from a steamy bathroom, water stains appear first as damp spots, but then develop dark rust-colored edges and take on a dirty appearance as they dry. After fixing the source of the problem affecting the sheetrock, you can treat the stain and paint over it.

Instructions

1. Mix a stain-cleaning solution by combining powdered trisodium phosphate (TSP) as directed on the container with water, or by combining equal portions of household bleach and water.

2. Sponge the solution directly on the watermark, saturating it thoroughly. Let the area dry completely.

3. Smooth the wall over the treated watermark with a drywall sander or fine-grit sanding paper to remove any roughness caused by the stain.

4. Apply a stain-blocking sealer over the area with a paint roller or a paint brush. If it's just a small stain, a brush works well. Let it dry.

5. Tape off any trim work, the ceiling and any adjacent walls that you are not going to paint with adhesive painter's tape.

6. Roll a coat of sealing primer over the entire wall, cutting in around doors, windows and the ceiling with a paintbrush. Let it dry.

7. Inspect the wall over the stain. You should not see the old watermark. If you do, brush on another coat of sanding sealing before painting the wall.

8. Roll on two coats of new wall paint using a brush to paint next to the areas taped off with painter's tape. Let the wall dry between paint coats and before removing the painter's tape.
