Apply paint to new wallboard after properly priming it.
After construction or remodeling in a home, you may have wallboard that needs painting. New wallboard -- also called drywall -- requires preparation with a special primer before painting. The special drywall primer ensures the paint will adhere without absorbing into the wallboard. With the correct preparation, you can paint on your chosen finish color and ensure that your new walls will stay attractive for years.
Instructions
1. Remove any sanding dust left on the walls from the from the wallboard finishing process. Wipe the drywall with a tack cloth, or vacuum the surface with the brush attachment until no dust remains.
2. Spread the dropcloths over the floor beneath the walls to protect your floors from paint drips and spills.
3. Apply strips of painter's tape over baseboards and the woodwork around the windows and door frames to protect the surfaces from primer and paint.
4. Fill the 5-gallon bucket about halfway with the PVA drywall primer. Attach the roller screen to the inside top of the bucket.
5. Apply primer along the perimeter of the wall with the 2-inch flat paintbrush -- this is called "cutting in." Omit this step if you are also painting the adjacent walls and ceiling -- in this case, you can paint right up to the adjacent surfaces with the paint roller without worrying about spreading primer or paint onto them.
6. Attach the roller extension to the paint roller. Dip the paint roller about halfway into the paint. Roll the paint roller over the roller screen three or four times to coat the roller evenly.
7. Apply the primer to the drywall with the paint roller in long, vertical strokes. Start in the bottom right corner. Paint up toward the ceiling in a slightly diagonal stroke, then paint straight down the wall toward the floor. Continue applying the primer in these up-and-down strokes -- reloading the roller with primer as necessary -- until the wall is covered.
8. Allow the primer to dry completely, for the time specified on the primer can. Wipe down the dry wallboard with the tack cloth to remove any residual dust.
9. Apply the latex paint over the primer with the paintbrush and roller, using the same technique as you did with the primer. Choose a flat paint if you desire a one-coat paint job that will be easy to keep clean and touch up. Choose an eggshell or satin latex if you desire some sheen on the wall, but apply two coats.
