Refinish The Rv Wallboard

Mobile homes generally come with wall panels installed instead of drywall.

Mobile homes often come with vinyl-covered panel board on at least some of the walls. These walls are fine except for the wallpaper patterns that may become dated over time, plus the fact that not everyone likes the seam cover strips on the walls. If you would like to give the walls a more updated look, remove the strips and cover the panels.

Instructions

1. Pop off the the wall strips that cover the seams between the panels. A putty knife or screwdriver will help you pry them off.

2. Wipe the walls down with a damp rag to remove dust.

3. Open all windows and doors for ventilation. Paint fumes should not be breathed. If you have issues with ventilation, use a filtered mask. Place a drop cloth on the floor to protect against drips.

4. Paint the panel walls with an acrylic-based primer using long vertical strokes. A paint roller will help you with the large sections of the wall, but use a brush near trim, floors and the ceiling. Let the primer dry overnight.

5. Spread on a thin layer of mud to the seams between the panels and place drywall tape to the mud. Press the tape in slightly so it sticks and cover over it with another thin layer of mud. Let this dry overnight.

6. Sand the mud smooth the next day to remove rough spots. Spread on a second thin layer of mud with the trowel, making it a little wider than the previous layer. Feather it out at the sides so the mud thins down to the wall level. Let it dry overnight.

7. Paint the walls. The paint does not have to be oil based. Paint as you did with the primer, with long even strokes.
