Fertilizer spreader settings show the ideal settings for the most effective fertilizer coverage. These settings determine how large the spreader opening should be to prevent disease and fertilizer burn. A lot more goes into the spreader setting selection than identifying a number.
Coverage
Most fertilizer spreader settings are based on the amount of coverage per square feet at a certain mile per hour speed. Most fertilizer companies assume a speed of about three miles per hour when fertilizing a lawn. Each brand of spreader has slightly different settings for the amount of coverage, but general settings typically apply across all brands. In general, the setting number specifies how many pounds of fertilizer will spread over a 1,000 square-foot area. The number 1 setting applies one pound, while the number 10 setting applies about 10 pounds of fertilizer.
Calibration
All spreader settings depend on the fertilizer spreader being calibrated properly. Calibrating the correct amount of fertilizer is a simple process. Weigh the correct amount of fertilizer that is supposed to cover a 100 square-foot area, Typically, the coverage amount for an area this small is one pound or less. Place the fertilizer in the spreader. Open the spreader about half way, to around a 4 or 5 setting--or the recommended setting. Spread the fertilizer over the 100 square-foot area. The fertilizer should cover the area exactly. If not, adjust the opening smaller or wider and write the correct setting on the fertilizer bag for future reference.
Accuracy
Spreader settings change for the brand of spreader, brand of fertilizer and the surface area, but they are generally accurate. Always start with the recommended spreader setting to achieve the best results. If you apply too much fertilizer plants can burn. Too little fertilizer will also harm plants and increase the chances for disease. Only change the fertilizer spreader setting after using the recommended amount and calibrating the fertilizer spreader to that type of fertilizer.
