Fix An Overfertilized Lawn

Washing away excess fertilizer can save your lawn.

Maintaining a healthy lawn can be a time-consuming chore. While you will need to invest less time (and probably money) in your lawn after it has become firmly established, it still requires care so it can thrive. Adding fertilizer to your lawn provides it with the nutrients it needs to survive. Add too much fertilizer, though, and you can damage the lawn because the fertilizer will burn it. In a worst-case scenario, you'll need to remove the dead patches and reseed or plant new sod, but before you do that, you can take some steps to try to save your lawn.

Instructions

1. Rake up excess fertilizer as soon as you spill it on the lawn to prevent it from interacting with the soil and grass.

2. Apply gypsum to the lawn, using at least 10 pounds for every 100 square feet of damaged area. The gypsum binds with the fertilizer and helps carry it away.

3. Water the lawn thoroughly for several weeks to drive the fertilizer out of the soil as quickly as possible.

4. Spread new grass seed on top of the lawn. If, after six to eight weeks you see no improvement, you'll need to remove the dead area and resod or reseed the lawn.
