Keyword density is a term that refers to the frequency with which a particular word is used in a document. It is a topic of particular concern to people who are attempting to improve results on search engines. Manually determining your keyword density can be a tedious chore, as it would require you to count all of the words in a document and then count the number of times that your keyword occurs within that document. Fortunately Microsoft Word contains tools that can simplify this process.
Instructions
1. Launch Microsoft Word, or double-click your Word document to open it in Microsoft Word.
2. Press "Ctrl + F" to open the search tool on the left side of the window.
3. Type your desired keyword into the field at the top of search tool, then wait for Word to search your document.
4. Locate the text under the search field that says "x matches," where "x" is the number of times that the keyword occurred in the document. Write down or otherwise record this number, as you will need it later. Click the "x" at the top right corner of the search tool to close it.
5. Click the "Review" tab at the top of the window.
6. Click the "Word Count" button in the "Proofing" section to determine your word count. Your word count is displayed in the pop-up window next to "Words." Write down or otherwise record this number.
7. Divide the number of times that your keyword occurs by the total number of words in your document. For example, if your keyword occurred 10 times in a document with 100 words, you would perform the operation "10/100."
8. Multiply the resulting quotient by 100 to determine your keyword density. In the above example you would have a quotient of ".1," which, when multiplied by 100, results in a keyword density of 10 percent.
