Fresh paint Vinylcoated Sheetrock

After using high-adhesion primer, Sheetrock color possibilities are endless.

Vinyl coatings help seal drywall surfaces for long-lasting durability. Unfortunately, if you don't like the color of a particular vinyl sealant, you'll find that the surface of drywall -- which is often called "Sheetrock" for a well-known brand name of drywall, or gypsum wall board -- by itself doesn't provide lasting adhesion for paint. If you want to paint on vinyl-coated drywall, you need to adequately prep the surface before painting. Without prep work, the paint may stick, but it won't be long before it chips off.

Instructions

1. Scrub the vinyl-coated drywall with a trisodium phosphate (TSP) cleaning solution and a rag. TSP is sold as a premixed cleaning solution, but it is also sold undiluted. If you're using a pure TSP cleanser, mix 1/4 cup of TSP with 1 gallon of water.

2. Sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper if the vinyl coating is at least 1/2 inch thick. If you're unsure of how thick the coating is, don't risk sanding down the vinyl. If you sand a very thin vinyl coating, you could completely expose the underlying drywall.

3. Apply high-adhesion primer to the vinyl-coated drywall using a synthetic-bristle paintbrush. Wait at least 24 hours for the primer to cure before proceeding with the next step.

4. Paint the primed drywall with latex or oil-base paint and a clean synthetic-bristle paintbrush.

5. Apply a second coat of paint after the first coat dries.
