Fix Drywall After Elimination Of Vinyl Wallpapers

Use drywall compound to smooth dings in the drywall.

Wallpaper adds style to your room, but after a few years, you may tire of the pattern, or the wallpaper may fade and show wear. Before you can paint the wall or hang new wallpaper, the old paper must come off. If wall conditioner, or sizing, was applied to the wall before hanging vinyl wallpaper, removal won't be too difficult. However, if the paper was applied over unfinished drywall, you may damage the walls during the wallpaper stripping process. With the same compound used to tape drywall joints, you can fix dings and scrapes in your walls.

Instructions

Patch a Few Dings

1. Wipe lingering glue residue from the drywall with a sponge dipped in warm water and wrung out. Wallpaper glue is water-soluble.

2. Apply premixed drywall compound with a 10-inch taping knife to scratches and dings in the drywall. Smooth the thick, clay-like substance into the depressions with the flat edge of the knife.

3. Let the compound dry completely and sand the wall with a pole sander. If your drywall has only a few dings, this is all you need to do. However, if there are many scrapes and gouges, you can apply a thin layer of drywall compound to the entire wall, with a process called "skim coating."

Skim Coat the Wall

4. Thin the drywall compound by mixing it with water in a 5-gallon bucket, until it's the consistency of a milkshake.

5. Pour the thinned compound into a large paint pan and use a thin-nap paint roller to apply the compound to the wall, starting on the edge of the wall and rolling evenly from top to bottom in 3-foot sections.

6. Smooth out the compound by positioning a wide, 14-inch taping trowel, in the crevice between the wall and the ceiling. Pull the trowel straight down, using just enough pressure to smooth out the wet compound.

7. Continue rolling on the compound and troweling the surface of the wall. Recruit an assistant. One of you can roll on the compound, while the other can trowel the wall smooth.

8. Let the compound dry completely and sand the wall with a pole sander.
