Install Drywall Against Pine Tongue & Groove

Installing drywall against tongue and groove requires adjusting wall and window jambs.

Wall tongue and groove can be covered with drywall by screwing it directly into the pine--the pine is usually 3/4 inch thick, which is thick enough to hold wall drywall. However, remember that the drywall will stick out past the wall and window jambs, so you'll have to apply small pieces of finish lumber to all jambs after drywall has been installed. Also, check local coding for the distance required between electrical boxes and finished wall surfaces; you may have to move the boxes forward so they're flush with the drywall surface.

Instructions

1. Measure from the side of the first piece of drywall with a tape measure and run pencil lines down each piece of drywall you'll install, 16 inches apart--the lines will be parallel with each other. Do this for all drywall sheets you install.

2. Hold the first piece of drywall vertically to the wall and in one corner of the room and use 1 5/8-inch drywall screws to screw into the lines every 8 inches. Screw in the sides and top and bottom every 8 inches also, using a drill gun.

3. Measure and cut the next drywall piece to size. Use a chalk line to measure out larger areas longer than your straight edge. Run a tradesman's knife along each line once and bend the drywall on the opposite side of the cut. This will break the drywall along the cut.

4. Run the knife along the inside of the cut to separate the drywall. For awkward areas, use a drywall saw to cut and separate the drywall. Continue in like fashion, methodically covering the first wall, then the next, until all the tongue-and-groove walls have been covered. Cut out the receptacle and light switch boxes in the drywall, using the drywall knife.
