Put Chicken Wire On The Hay Bale House

Straw bale houses are houses that are insulated with straw bale instead of the standard fiberglass insulation materials used in modern construction. Just like all other houses that have stucco exteriors, straw bale houses have their exterior covered with chicken wire, wire mesh or lath, in order to reinforce the cement render. Putting chicken wire on a straw bale house is really no different from putting it on any other type of construction.

Instructions

1. Lay a large section of chicken wire over a portion of the exterior wall of your straw bale house.

2. Attach the chicken wire to the wooden beams of the walls of the house by driving staples into the beams with a staple gun. Staples should be about 6 inches apart, vertically along the entire height of the beam.

3. Attach the chicken wire to the straw bale by driving landscape pins into the straw bales. Landscaping pins should be 6 inches apart and hold the chicken wire horizontally along the top and bottom of the chicken wire section you are attaching. Drive the landscaping pins in with your hand or, if the straw bale is too tightly stacked, with a hammer.

4. Cut the chicken wire to length on corners, window openings, or door openings with wire cutters.

5. Repeat this process until you've covered the entire exterior of the house, from top to bottom. When you have chicken wire sections crossing over other sections of chicken wire, do not have the wire intersect more than 8-inches. If you are not going to be covering the interior of the house with drywall, and will be using cement through-and-through, then you will also have to cover the entire interior of the house with chicken wire.
