A hole saw is a kind of bit that attaches to you power drill and cuts different size holes in any surface, including drywall. It looks like a cup with teeth around the rim with a regular drill bit sticking up from the middle, which is the pilot bit. It's often used for cutting a hole in a door to install a doorknob, but you can use it to cut drywall if you need to cut a hole for the water supply line to a toilet. Make sure the diameter of the hole saw is just a little larger than the supply pipe or other object the hole will go around.
Instructions
1. Use a tape measure to determine where to locate where the hole will be on the drywall sheet. Measure from two perpendicular sides of whatever it is that requires the hole, and use the intersection of those two measurements to pinpoint the location. For example, if you're cutting a hole for a plumbing pipe near the floor, measure from the floor to the pipe, then from the nearest side--wall to pipe.
2. Lay your drywall sheet out on two sawhorses. Use the tape measure and pencil to mark on the sheet, using your two measurements. Measure from what will be the bottom of the sheet and from what will be the side, then mark where they intersect. Once you have your mark, adjust the sawhorses so there is open space under the mark on the drywall.
3. Insert the hole saw bit into your power drill. Hold the bit facing down over the mark. Set the pilot onto the mark. The pilot bit is the thin metal stem in the center of the hole saw that extends slightly farther out from the rest of it.
4. Squeeze the trigger of the drill and very slowly lower the hole saw down through the drywall. Don't push or you'll break the drywall; just let the weight of the drill press down and slowly sink through the surface.
5. Once you're all the way through, pull the drill back up. Don't release the trigger until after you've pulled the bit back out of the hole. The piece is now ready to install.
