Use A Corner Cap For Drywall

Install drywall corner caps for a sharp and aesthetic appearance.

An outside corner cap can hide unsightly gaps where two drywall sheets meet. Corner caps, in contrast to metal corner beading, are typically constructed of durable plastic, and have either a 90-degree or bullnose apex. The bullnose corner cap, compared to the 90-degree, provides a slightly rounded corner cap option. Either cap will span most drywall corners, concealing gaps, cracks or dents in the drywall.

Instructions

1. Prepare the drywall corner by smoothing any rough edges or protrusions with sandpaper. Wipe the corner with a damp rag, and allow to dry.

2. Apply joint compound along the drywall corner slightly beyond the dimensions of the corner cap, using a putty knife.

3. Mount the corner cap against the drywall corner, pressing it into the joint compound.

4. Cover the corner cap with joint compound, using a putty knife. Spread the joint compound from the corner apex outward past the edges of the cap, bringing the cap flush with the drywall. Smooth any ridges in the joint compound with the putty knife. Allow the compound to dry.

5. Apply a second coat of compound using the same procedure as the first coat. Smooth out ridges and blemishes using the putty knife. Allow the compound to dry. Sand the compound flush to the surrounding drywall.
