Sheetrock provides a smooth ceiling.
Drywall panels provide an optimal ceiling surface, suitable for painting or adding texture. Drywall is made from gypsum particles, compressed tightly into panels and then covered with thick paper. Sheetrock is a popular brand of drywall, manufactured by USG Corp. in Canada and widely sold throughout the United States. The process of installing Sheetrock on a ceiling is the same as installing other types of drywall panels.
Instructions
1. Run the Sheetrock panels perpendicular to the ceiling joists. The panels come in 4-foot widths and 8-, 10- or 12-foot lengths.
2. Measure from one corner to the center of the ceiling joist that is just short of the length of your Sheetrock panel. Sometimes, your panels will extend exactly to the middle of a stud, but often, you must cut the end to fit. For example, if you're hanging 8-foot panels, but the distance from the side wall to the stud is 7-foot, 8-inches, that's your measurement.
3. Cut your Sheetrock panel to your measurement, using a carpenter's square and a utility knife for a straight cut.
4. Position one Sheetrock panel on the drywall lift and raise it to the ceiling, pushing it tightly into the corner. The drywall lift only raises the panel; an assistant will have to hold it in place, lining up the outside edge on the middle of the stud.
5. Insert drywall screws about every 8 inches through the Sheetrock panel into the ceiling joists beneath. Along the edges, keep the screws about ½-inch away from the edge.
6. Measure, cut and install another Sheetrock panel, raising it with the lift and snugging the panels as tightly together as possible before inserting the screws.
7. Repeat the process until the entire ceiling is covered with Sheetrock. Now, you're ready to tape and finish the drywall.
