A hammer drill and carbide-tipped drill bit make it easy to put anchors in concrete walls.
Hanging shelves, tool racks, storage containers or furring strips on a concrete wall in your garage or basement can seem like a daunting task. Most concrete hangers require installing an anchor to prevent the concrete from crumbling when you drive the hanger into the wall. With the right materials and tools, installing the anchor and the hanger is easy. The two most important considerations are selecting a hanger suitable for the weight (or load) of the object and using a carbide-tipped drill bit and a hammer drill.
Instructions
Plastic Anchors
1. Use plastic anchors for objects that weigh less than 50 pounds, which will include shelf brackets, framed pictures and rake and shovel holders. Position the object on the wall and mark the position of the holes for the screws that will hold the object to the wall.
2. Drill a pilot hole for the anchor using the hammer drill and a carbide-tipped drill bit. The pilot hole should be as deep as the screw that goes into the anchor is long. The manufacturer's instructions will tell you what size drill bit to use. Drill all the holes to hang the object according to your marks.
3. Tap the plastic anchor into the hole with a hammer. The anchor should be snug but not so tight that pounding it into the concrete distorts it. If the anchor becomes distorted, you will not be able to drive the screw into it; if you try, the anchor will split into parts and the cement around it will crumble. Tap anchors into the other pilot holes.
4. Place the bracket or holder on top of the anchors and drive the screws into the anchors using an electric driver.
Hammer Set Fasteners
5. Select these fasteners when you need to hang furring strips on a concrete wall. Furring strips are 1-1/2-inch by 3/4-inch pieces of wood. Use furring strips to attach drywall to concrete to finish a basement.
6. Position the furring strip against the wall and hold it in place. Drill through the wood and into the concrete to the depth of the fastener.
7. Push the anchor into the hole, then strike the pin in the center of the anchor with a hammer to drive it into the concrete.
Sleeve Anchors
8. Use sleeve anchors to attach medium- to heavy-weight objects to concrete walls. Sleeve anchors come in various sizes and will accommodate a load of up to 200 pounds. A sleeve anchor is a two-part fastener with a screw inserted inside a metal sleeve.
9. Position the item you want to hang on the wall and drill through the item and into the concrete to the depth of the sleeve fasteners using a drill bit the same diameter as the fastener and a hammer drill.
10. Push the anchors with the nuts inside them into the holes, then use a wrench to tighten the nut and washer that extend out from the anchor. As you tighten the nut, the sleeve will expand against the concrete. Do not overtighten.
