Cut Fiberglassreinforced Boards

Fiberglass-reinforced wall boards come in many varieties, from wood grain to colored patterns.

Fiberglass-reinforced boards are a less expensive alternative to tile or other wall coverings. These panel boards come in sheets 4 feet wide by 8 feet tall, just as drywall does. These are popular in many bathrooms because of the low price and ease of installation. When installing these fiberglass-reinforced boards, you may find it necessary to cut a board. The requires tools that most handymen may already have.

Instructions

1. Measure the area in which you need the board to fit with a tape measure.

2. Place the fiberglass paneling face-down on the two sawhorses. Use the tape measure to determine a cut line based on the dimensions you previously measured. Mark a straight cutting line with a pencil and a straight edge.

3. Install a carbide-tipped circular sawblade onto the circular saw. Adjust the blade depth of the circular saw so that it is just thicker than your fiberglass board.

4. Place the circular saw at one end of the cut line and power it on. Move the saw smoothly and steadily along the cut line until you have completed your cut.

5. Cut any notched edged with a jigsaw. Install a metal cutting blade in the jigsaw. Measure and mark the notches needed with a straight edge and pencil. Leave the paneling face down on the sawhorses during the jigsaw cut.

6. Place the jigsaw at one end of the cut line. Use a similar method to the circular saw cut, performing a steady, even movement until the cut is completed.

7. Drill a pilot hole if you need to make cuts in the center of the board. This may be necessary to go around light switches or electrical plugs. Mark the square to be cut out with a pencil. Drill a hole in the center of the square just large enough for your jigsaw blade. Insert the jigsaw blade into the hole and follow the cut pattern until the center hole is cut out.

8. Smooth any rough edges around the fiberglass reinforced board with medium-grit sandpaper.
