Tile lays over backerboard.
In the world of tiling, cement backerboard is commonly used over its gypsum-based counterparts due to water-resistant greenboard not being waterproof. There are also backerboards with a gypsum core that are coated in fiberglass and have waterproof coatings on the sides to prevent damage. While you can install them in a variety of ways including walls, floors and countertops, each having differing degrees of installation, installation over a plywood floor requires the use of a thinset mortar and special tools.
Instructions
1. Install the mortar using your 1/4-inch-by-1/4-inch square trowel. Even the thinset out, making the surface flat and even.
2. Lay the backer board panels on top of the thinset. Leave a 1/8-inch gap between each panel.
3. Fill the gaps with thinset, allowing the mortar to overlap the joints approximately 2 to 4 inches to help even out panels that aren't equal.
4. Lay 2-inch-wide fiberglass tape into the the mortar. Level it using the trowel's flat end and additional thinset.
5. Screw or nail the backer board into the subfloor. Do not let the fasteners penetrate the floor joists.
