A sculpture made with cement can last a very very long time. You can make a cement sculpture for indoor or outdoor use. They are sturdy, and the natural looking finish can complement many decor styles. If you're interested in making a cement sculpture, get started today.
Instructions
1. Begin your sculpture by building a "skeleton" of scrap wood and/or Styrofoam for support. Scrap wood can be used to create the inner framework of a very large piece, and Styrofoam creates lightweight bulk.
2. Cover the entire skeleton with chicken wire and then wire mesh. Use the chicken wire to create certain details, like facial noses.
3. Cover the piece with one final layer of fiber mesh adhesive tape, more commonly used for drywall joints.
4. Measure the water according to the label on your T-2000 cement. Some concrete stain products are designed to be added at this stage for even color distribution. Others are designed to be applied afterward, like a paint.
5. Wear sturdy rubber gloves to protect your hands. Too much exposure to cement can ruin your manicure and cause terrible painful cracking on your knuckles. In addition to the drying properties of the cement, the pebbles and rocks can scratch your skin.
6. Mix your cement in a bucket or trough. An unbelievable amount of water must be mixed into the cement mixture. Use small quantities at first, until you get the feel for the product. When sculpting in detailed areas, small quantities will allow you to more time to work with the product. Press the cement deep into the cracks as you're working. Use hand tools to spread large quantities of cement.
