Replace Joint Tape

Joint tape repair can be a do-it-yourself endeavor.

Joint tape is a cross-fiber tape that comes as either self-adhesive or paper tape that helps to secure joints and corners of drywall. Using joint tape is faster, cheaper and more efficient than traditional drywall finishing. Over time, joint tape can peel due to humidity or wall damage and need to be replaced.

Instructions

1. Cut old tape with a razor knife, peel it off the wall and discard.

2. Wipe down the wall with a rag to ensure a clean surface for the new tape.

3. Mix up the "mud" according to the directions if you are using paper tape. Apply mud to the wall and then press and smooth the paper tape across the seam. If you are using self-adhesive tape, apply directly across the seam and smooth.

4. Allow the mud to dry and the tape to set, then trowel on a smooth layer of pre-mixed, drywall compound.

5. Allow the drywall compound sufficient time to dry, then sand down until the seam is smooth and flush with the rest of the wall. Re-cover with drywall compound any visible tape and once more sand smooth. The wall is now ready to be primed and painted.
