Fresh paint Bare Plaster Walls

Bare plaster walls are often cracked or have loose material on the surface, which can thwart your painting project. This is why proper preparation of the wall is important. Use a good primer, and spend a little extra for good brushes and rollers, as they will make the job easier and the results more long-lasting. Let each layer of paint dry completely before applying the next. Remember that multiple thin layers of paint are always preferable to one or two thick layers.

Instructions

1. Remove all the furniture. Take off the electrical plates and any other obstructions, with a screwdriver. Lay out tarps.

2. Scrape the wall with a drywall knife to remove any loose paint or plaster. Fill any cracks or holes with patching plaster, smoothing it out with your drywall knife. Let it dry for eight hours. Sand it smooth.

3. Caulk around the perimeter of the wall, where the wall meets the floor trim and ceiling trim, and around any window or door trim. Let the caulk dry for 12 hours.

4. Use a paintbrush to brush primer onto the wall alongside the edges, by the caulk you laid and up the vertical corners. Make the lines of primer smooth and straight. Prime the rest of the wall with a paint roller, applying it in long vertical strokes that overlap as you move across the wall. Let the primer set for 24 hours.

5. Apply the paint in the same manner as the primer, first along the edges of the wall with a brush, then on the rest of it with a roller. Keep the layer of paint thin and flat, even if primer shows through, as there will be at least one more coat of paint over it. Do the whole wall. Let the paint set for 24 hours.

6. Repeat Step 5 to apply a second coat of paint. Apply a third coat if necessary.
