An important part of search engine optimization is picking keywords for your website. There are a host of online tools that make it simple. Follow these steps to pick the words that will help drive traffic to your site.

1. Brainstorm some keywords for your website. Imagine what words your target customers would type into Google to search for your products and services. Keep a list of potential keywords.
2. Use free online tools to check for keywords. For example, a popular free keyword suggestion tool is located at: the site listed in the Resources section below. Type in a keyword or keyword phrase and click on the "Hit Me" button.
3. Review the results for high-demand keywords. The top keyword searches will be on the top with the number of monthly searches listed. Use it as a guide to focus your efforts on the most popular searched keywords.
4. Check the competition. Take your best keywords and search for them in Google. Note how many search engine results are returned for each keyword phrase.
5. Choose the keywords that have the lowest competition with the fewest search engine results pages returned on Google.
