Tofu is a popular and versatile soy curd product that is commonly used in vegetarian cooking. Soybeans, from which tofu is made, are packed with protein and fiber and are no more complicated to grow than any other bush bean. Soybeans, like many beans, come in different varieties. For tofu, you're likely to want the traditional green soybean, but the variety will depend on your location and climate.
Instructions
1. Obtain an organic variety from a seed company you trust. The shortest of the short-season varieties takes only 75 days to bear, according to The Farmer's Almanac.
2. Amend the soil with compost. Incorporate at least 2 to 3 inches into the top 6 inches of soil. Avoid planting soybeans in a low spot where water will collect.
3. Rake the soil smooth before planting.
4. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, 2 to 4 inches apart, in rows from 18 to 24 inches apart. Plant only healthy looking seeds.
5. Water seeds well at planting. They should germinate in about a week. Provide 1 to 2 inches of water per week until harvest.
6. Keep weeds away from young plants. Cultivate with a hoe. Full-grown plants will cover the ground and keep down weeds on their own.
7. Harvest the soybeans when the beans inside the pods are firm. Pluck the pods from the plant. Harvest before the pods turn yellow.
