Repair Lead Joints On The Tiffany Hanging Light

Stained glass light fixtures are beautiful additions to a home.

Leaded glass light fixtures are beloved for their beauty and craftsmanship, and many have been handed down through generations. Over time, even the best-crafted leaded glass fixture will have problems in the joints between the glass pieces and the lead that holds them together. Restoring the lead joints on a Tiffany hanging light is a challenging project, but with patience and safety in mind, it is not an insurmountable task.

Instructions

1. Use a rotary tool with a wire brush attachment and scrape away the face of the lead needing repair. New lead will adhere much better to old lead if the surface has been abraded first. Clean up the lead dust with the shop vacuum before proceeding.

2. Brush flux over the newly exposed lead and onto the tip of your hot soldering iron. Clean the tip of the soldering iron on a wet sponge.

3. Cut a piece of solder to an appropriate working size for the spot that you are repairing. Place the solder near the area that needs to be repaired and melt it with the soldering iron. Be careful not to use too much, as you can always add more if you don't have enough.

4. Move the soldering iron across the lead, smoothing the solder and pushing it into the joint. Only press the soldering iron onto the lead for a couple of seconds at a time or you may melt the existing lead. Any drips on the glass can be scraped off later.

5. Check the repair. If you are unsatisfied with the work, wait for the solder to cool and repeat the process until you are satisfied. Clean the glass and check the opposite side of the repaired area. Depending on how deeply damaged the joint was, it may also require the same kind of repair.
