Homemade Knife Block

Store several knives out of the reach of children in a cabinet or use the knife block as decor.

A large wooden knife block on the kitchen counter can be an element in your kitchen decor. However, they generally take up space that can be used for various other kitchen elements. A solution to this is using a magnetic knife block that can be mounted on the wall or in a kitchen cabinet. This type of knife block will allow for more counter space and is convenient to keep the knives out of the reach of children. With items found at most hardware and crafts store, you can build your own magnetic knife block.

Instructions

1. Select the knives that will be stored by the knife block to determine the length the hardwood should be cut to.

2. Use a table saw to cut the wood to the desired length. Sand the wood smooth, including corners and edges.

3. Use a paintbrush to apply wood stain to each side of the wood. Allow enough time for the wood stain to dry. Read the label on the wood stain to determine the drying time.

4. Glue a strip of magnets along the top of the wood, about 1/2 inch down from the edge. Leave approximately 3/4 inch between each magnet. Similarly, glue a second strip along the bottom of the of wood, about 1/2 inch up from the bottom edge.

5. Allow enough time for the glue to set and gain full working strength. Determine the time by reading the label on the glue as it varies with brand.

6. Select the area where you would like to hang your knife block. Find a stud in the wall and use screws to secure each corner of the knife block to the wall. Drill pilot holes through the wood and a short distance into the wall before driving the screws.

7. Hang the knives on the block by setting the metal blades flat against the block with the blades pointed up.
