Designing Walls With Blown Steel

Go beyond appliances with steel to create a sleek, contemporary look for your home.

For a sleek, contemporary look for your home, incorporate steel into your decor to give it a strong urban edge. Go beyond appliances and wall sconces, and add a wall of brushed steel to your kitchen, bathroom or living room to make a modern statement.

Instructions

1. Decide the end look you want to achieve before you begin. Brushed steel is available in a variety of formats, from 1-inch by 1-inch hexagons to to a 30-inch by 48-inch sheet.

2. Measure your space and purchase your materials. Brushed steel is an expensive treatment. A single 30-by-48 sheet costs about $180 (as of 2010), so your budget may dictate how much of your wall you want to devote to this treatment.

3. Hang the backer board, which should be either a concrete/masonry and cement backer board or gypsum board. Drywall is not a suitable surface.

4. Apply thinset mortar with a notched trowel in a 4-foot area. Position the tiles and press them into the mortar.

5. Finish by applying unsanded grout into the spaces between the tiles. Clear extra grout off the face of the tiles immediately.

6. Remove protective tape from the surface of the tiles. Clean them with warm water and a soft cloth. Don't use abrasive cleaners. Wipe them dry to prevent spots from forming.
