Install An Electric Box Using The Drywall In Position

The presence of an electrical box is necessary to installing a light switch or outlet. The electrical code in every city requires that electrical equipment be installed in a box. The box is normally attached to a stud during construction of the wall, but can be added later, if necessary. Adding an electrical box to a finished wall is accomplished by finding a stud and then cutting the drywall. The job is completed in about an hour.

Instructions

1. Locate a stud in the wall using a stud finder. Stud finders operate differently depending on the model, so follow the instructions for the model you have. Locate a stud in the general area you wish to install the electrical box. Mark the right edge of the stud with a pencil at the height the box will be installed.

2. Place the box along the edge of the stud upside down and use a pencil to outline the box on the wall.

3. Cut along the line on the wall using a drywall saw. Cut on the inside of the line to ensure that the hole is not too big. The hole should be the shape of the box with the edge of the stud along the left side.

4. Fit the box into the hole. Use a utility knife to shave off any sections of drywall where the box may not fit.

5. Place the box in the hole and fasten it to the stud with the nails provided in the box. Use a hammer to pound the nails into the stud.
