Use Potassium Sulfate As Fertilizer On Fescue

Potassium sulfate increases the cold hardiness of fescue.

There are many different varieties of fescue grass, but according to turf grass seeds and sod distributor Seedland's website, they are all divided into either the Tall Fescue or the Fine Fescue classifications. Fescue is a cool season grass, which means that it grows during the fall and winter months when other warm season grasses die back. Potassium sulfate is a good fertilizer for fescue because it increases the grass's tolerance to cold. Apply the fertilizer in the fall, just before major growth begins.

Instructions

1. Dig up 1 tsp. of soil from the area where the fescue is growing. Place the soil into the potassium test tube from the soil test kit and then add the potassium test powder, also from the test kit. Fill the tube with distilled water until it reaches the top line on the tube. Place the cap on the tube and shake it vigorously.

2. Allow the tube to sit undisturbed for about five minutes and compare the color of the water to the color chart on the soil test kit. If the color of the water falls into the low category on the chart, it is safe to apply potassium sulfate to the fescue.

3. Fill a fertilizer spreader with the potassium sulfate granules according to the dosage on the fertilizer package. Set the dispensing dial on the spreader to a rate of 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

4. Place the fertilizer spreader at the edge of the fescue lawn and push down on the lever located on the handle to dispense the potassium sulfate. Walk along the entire area of fescue grass.
