Repair Effervescing Plaster

Peeling paint and plaster caused by effervescence.

Effervescing is when moisture or water seeps through masonry or plaster. It can cause a variety of problems, from depositing mineral salts on the surface to peeling paint and other finishes from the plaster. The problem will then worsen as the missing finish exposes the underlying plaster to more water damage. As more and more moisture is allowed to permeate the plaster it will continue to deteriorate. In addition, if the wall is exposed to the outside, the water can freeze causing the wall to crack and crumble. The only solution is to stop the moisture from seeping into the plaster and saturating it.

Instructions

1. Remove loose paint and crumbling plaster by scraping it with the wire brush and flat side of the trowel. Clean all loose dust and debris from the wall using the nylon brush. Use a damp sponge to pick up any remaining grit and paint flecks and ensure the surface is completely clean. Let the surface dry completely.

2. Paint the entire area with the sealing primer. Use the surface of the brush to force the primer into every void and hole in the surface. Brush and smooth over the entire area ensuring a complete and seamless seal.

3. Mix the plaster with water to achieve a smooth and thick consistency. Using the trowel, spread the plaster thickly over the entire surface, then scrape back over it with the flat side. Concentrate on filling voids rather than getting a perfect finish.

4. Allow the plaster to dry, and then scrape lightly with the wire brush. Apply another coat, continuing to fill in voids and smoothing the surface. Continue this step by applying a thinner coat each time and smoothing the surface as you go until you have achieved a flat and smooth finish.

5. Lightly drag the wire brush across the surface. Wipe clean with a damp sponge.

6. Apply another coat of the sealing primer and allow to dry.

7. Apply a finish coat of paint.
