Fireproof A Gun Safe

Most gun safes are intended primarily to guard against theft, although some are more fire-resistant than others. To make a gun safe so it will better withstand heat and flame, position the safe appropriately in the home and reinforce the heat resistance by adding materials inside. The procedure is straightforward and requires some materials from a hardware store along with a few supplies most households will have.

Instructions

1. Decide on a location for the gun safe that is free of combustibles, such as window curtains, stacks of newspapers and other paper and plastic materials.

2. Place the carpet remnant on the floor in the location that has been chosen for the gun safe. Place the gun safe on the carpet remnant -- moving the safe may require the use of a dolly or hand truck and the assistance of other people, depending upon its weight and size.

3. Unlock the gun safe door and open it wide. Remove any contents from inside. Apply bonding glue to the top, bottom and left and right sides inside the gun safe -- taking care not to get any bonding glue on the locking latch on the side of the gun safe door.

4. Place fireproof tiles on the top, bottom and sides inside the gun safe; hold each tile in position for a half minute so that it adheres to the bonding glue before proceeding to place another tile. Let the bonding glue set for three hours once all of the tiles have been placed inside.

5. Wrap the gun in the fireproof cloth, taking care to cover the entire gun from handle to barrel. Place the gun on the middle of the floor inside the gun safe. Close the gun safe door. Lock your fire-resistant gun safe.
