Use plaster of Paris to create a variety of crafts.
Plaster of Paris is a gypsum powder material that, when mixed with water, can be used for a variety of casts and molds for art, crafts or household uses. A plaster of Paris kit for arts and crafts will usually contain pliable sculpted prototype molds for the mixture to be poured into. Once the plaster of Paris has dried and taken the shape of the mold, the sculpture can be painted and displayed. Both children and adults can use and enjoy a plaster of Paris kit.
Instructions
1. Purchase the materials for your plaster of Paris activity at any arts and crafts or hardware store. All-in-one kits are available in stores and online, but you can also purchase the plaster of Paris powder and the plastic molds of your choice separately, for variety.
2. Set up your workspace by laying newspaper across a flat table and underneath on the floor, for protection. Plaster of Paris dries quickly. Having to remove pieces of the dried plaster may cause damage to your table or flooring. Put on plastic gloves to protect your skin.
3. Place the plastic molds onto the table to have them ready to receive the mixture. The less time your mixture is waiting to be poured, the better, as it will thicken upon standing.
4. Measure the desired amount of powdered plaster of Paris and pour into a mixing bucket. Generally, the measurement of water should be exactly half the amount of powder. However, be sure to read the recommended measurements on the brand of plaster of Paris you purchased, as measurements can differ.
5. Stir the mixture with a plastic spatula until it has reached a smooth consistency. When it's evenly mixed, carefully fill your plastic molds with the wet plaster of Paris. Gently shake the plastic mold to ensure there are no holes or unfilled spaces in your sculpture. Use the spatula to smooth the back of your sculpture.
6. Cut 2 to 3 inches of chicken wire. Create a loop and stick the straight end into the plaster in the plastic mold before it dries, for crafts made for hanging. For objects made for standing on a shelf or desk, this step is not necessary.
7. Allow the mold to dry. Drying can take from 5 to 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the consistency of your mixture, the brand used and the size of your plastic mold. Periodically use your finger to lightly touch and test for moisture. Once the plaster has dried, carefully flip over the plastic mold, holding the bottom in place with your fingers. Start by gently lifting the edges of the plastic mold until it's removed, revealing your finished casting. Decorate according to your wishes.
