The Best Way To Set Up Ultraply Underlayment

Underlayment provides a good surface for new flooring.

Before installing new flooring, it is wise to give consideration to the underlayment you will have in place. Underlayment is a product placed between the subfloor and the flooring to insulate, cushion, and provide a moisture barrier. There are multiple types of underlayment, including cork, gypsum, foam, plastic, rubber, and wood products. Ultraply underlayment is one product that can be used. It is a wood product that will hold flooring firmly in place when installed according to manufacturer's instructions.

Instructions

1. Remove old flooring remnants from the subfloor. Clean and sweep the surface thoroughly.

2. Place Ultraply underlayment panels in the room where it is to be installed for 18 to 48 hours prior to installation to acclimate the underlayment to the room's temperature and humidity.

3. Place Ultraply underlayment sheets on the subfloor with the stamp side down. Position the long edge of the pieces perpendicular to the floor joists. Underlayment seams should be offset from the subfloor seams by at least 6 inches. Position underlayment by staggering panels by 16 inches. Panels can be scored with a sharp knife and snapped into desired pieces.

4. Leave a 1/8-inch gap between the underlayment and the walls. Butt the edges of the panels lightly. Do not force panels into position.

5. Nail panels into position on the subfloor using 12-gauge galvanized ring groove shank nails. Do not completely penetrate the subfloor or nail into the joists. Scatter fasteners throughout the underlayment with 4-inch separations.

6. Secure edge fasteners 3/8 inch from edges every 1 1/2 inches. All fasteners should be flush with the surface or slightly below the surface of the underlayment.

7. Fill seams and noticeable depressions with a Portland-based, latex modified patch. Sand to a smooth finish. Dry thoroughly before installing flooring over the underlayment.
