Apply Selfleveling Concrete

Apply Self-Leveling Concrete

Applying self-leveling concrete is a fairly simple process, although it can go a lot faster if you have assistance. Generally, self-leveling concrete is applied over another surface, such as brick, old concrete or paver stones. It does not set properly when poured over a dirt or sand surface. For that reason, it is usually used to update a patio or floor area.

Instructions

1. Ensure that your working area is clean and dry.

2. Use a push broom to spread a coat of primer over your work area. Make sure the layer of primer covers the entire floor, is even and does not leave any puddles. If there are puddles, they should be brushed off before continuing.

3. Follow the manufacturer's directions on the primer for the drying time--generally more than 1 hour but less than 24 hours.

4. Calculate the amount of water needed to mix your self-leveling concrete and measure it out. While withholding about 10 percent of the water, pour the rest into your bucket.

5. Use the drill to mix the dry powdered self-leveling concrete into the water in the bucket.

6. Add the remaining 10 percent of the water to the mixture and continue mixing with the drill for another 2 minutes to ensure a very smooth mixture.

7. Set the concrete spreader to ¼ inch.

8. Spread your self-leveling concrete over your work area, pushing it level with the concrete spreader.

9. Smooth the concrete with the steel concrete smoother immediately after pouring the concrete to help reduce pin holes and surface tension.

10. Wait at least 4 or 5 hours before allowing any contact with it, so that the concrete can cure properly.
