Finish Drywall Outdoors Corners

The outside corners of gypsum walls can be damaged through normal wear and tear. After time, these corners may need to be replaced or repaired. With a few tools, you can repair or replace your own walls without hiring a costly carpenter or handyman. Use metal corner beads to make corners more rigid, and to create a work area where you can sand joint compounds.

Instructions

1. Measure the height of the outside corner of the wall. Measure the height from the floor all the way to the ceiling.

2. Measure and cut the metal corner bead to the appropriate height. Use a hacksaw, tin snips or a circular saw outfitted with a metal cutting blade.

3. Position the metal corner bead in the corner. Plumb the metal corner bead; use a level before sinking the back teeth into the drywall. To set the corner bead, tap it with a rubber mallet so that the bead's teeth sink into the drywall.

4. Apply joint compound with a trowel. Place a workable amount of joint compound on the trowel and spread it at a downward angle. The trowel edge should be flush against the drywall and the raised corner of the metal corner bead to ensure that the compound is smoothly spread into any openings along the metal bead. Wait for the compound to dry.

5. Sand the compound with paper that's between 120 and 320 grit. Use a sanding block, an electric palm sander or specialized sanding tool designed for drywall finishing. Sand the joint compound to achieve smooth, flush outside corners.
