Dirt Corner Drywall

Drywall edges must be protected with metal stripping.

Once you get past the heavy lifting of drywall panels, the actual task of hanging the material is fairly straightforward, and only practice will make you better. You will find that different situations call for different materials, such as outer corners. These corners are taped over just as you would tape inside corners or regular drywall seams. However, outer corners need more protection, since they will constantly be bumped and grabbed.

Instructions

1. Place drywall metal corner strips on the outside corners, and drill drywall screws through them and into the wall. There are holes in the strips for this purpose. The metal corner protectors prevent the corners from getting damaged.

2. Spread a thin layer of drywall mud over both sides of inside corners. Also spread a thin layer over the metal corner strips on outside corners. Use a small taping knife to spread the mud.

3. Press drywall tape into the inside corners and over the thin layer of mud. Do this while the mud is still wet. Use the taping knife's edge to press the middle length of the tape into the corner, and then smooth the edges of the tape out flat against both sides of the wall.

4. Spread a second thin layer of mud over the tape to seal it in. Let all the mudded areas dry for a day.

5. Sand the surface of the mud to smooth it down, and then apply another coat of drywall mud over both the inside and outside corners. The coat needs to be thick enough so you do not see the tape or the metal strips. Feather the edges as you work out from the corners, eventually scraping the mud smooth with the surface of the wall. Let it dry for a day.

6. Sand the corner mud areas one more time the next day to remove any rough spots.
