Whether you are trying to block out noise from the neighbors or from your own family, there are many reasons to soundproof your walls. Soundproofing gives you peace and quiet by blocking others' noise, as well as privacy and solitude by keeping sound from traveling. There are multiple options for soundproofing a room. If a totally soundproof space is what you want, then the key is to layer the soundproofing materials.

Insulation
1. Remove any drywall and insulation on the walls and ceiling.
2. Use acoustic insulation to fill the voids between wall studs and ceiling joists. If necessary, fill voids between the floor joists as well; this may require opening up the ceiling on the floor below. The insulation is the first layer of soundproofing.
3. Close up the walls and ceiling with soundproof drywall, such as QuietRock. This will act as the second layer of soundproofing material. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for mudding and taping.
4. Use latex acoustical ceiling and wall paint to paint the room. This will add one more layer of protection.
