Exactly What Is A Soil Conditioner

You can't cultivate a healthy garden without healthy soil.

Whether you are growing flowers or vegetables, high-quality soil is key to having a beautiful garden. Soil conditioner is vital for obtaining such fine soil.

Identification

Soil conditioner is made up of decayed organic matter. It is added to soil to improve drainage and airflow. It also keeps moisture and nutrients near the roots.

Types

Different types of soil conditioners include peat moss, leaves, manure and compost. By using any of these, soil can be kept in great shape for gardening.

Characteristics

Soil conditioners are natural and earthy. They also absorb water well. Peat moss is brown, spongy and made from moss remains. Compost is "synthetic manure" made from decomposing materials, fertilizer and soil. Leaves and manure are also natural products.

Function

Because soil conditioners are made from natural materials, they help to improve the amount of minerals in the soil. Soil that is rich in minerals will produce much healthier vegetation. Leaves work by attracting earthworms which create healthy soil.

Considerations

Manure shouldn't be too fresh. Make sure it is at least six months old. And don't use just any manure lying around. Use manure from horses, cows and sheep. Peat moss should be wet. Otherwise it won't mix well with the soil.
