Dog and cat urine on the lawn causes a number of problems for homeowners. Heavy doses of nitrogen in the urine can burn the grass, leaving brown spots behind. In addition, cats and dogs tend to return to the same areas repeatedly, which can result in a strong odor emanating from your yard. Physical barriers and retraining pets can help to prevent continued soiling, and eliminating the smell will also discourage cats and dogs from returning to the affected areas.
Instructions
1. Flood the area with water from a garden hose. This will help to flush away the odor that drives animals to constantly return to the same spot. Try to do this as soon as possible after the animal soils the lawn to prevent a high odor concentration.
2. Use a commercial enzymatic odor remover on the affected areas, according to the manufacturer's directions. These types of products are available at pet supply stores.
3. Sprinkle some gypsum pellets on the affected areas and then spray the area with water to work it into the soil. Gypsum helps to absorb some of the odor and also acts as a lawn fertilizer.
