Prevent yellow grass and keep grass green.
Causes of yellow grass include billbugs--their larvae feed on the grass, causing yellow patches--or chinch bugs--they eat the grass sap, also causing yellow patches. There's another possible cause--dog urine. The high concentration of nitrogen in a dog's urine turns green grass to yellow. If you have a dog that urinates on your lawn, start with solutions to change the nitrogen exposure. If you don't have a dog, your problem may be an insect infestation or exposure to high concentrations of salt.
Instructions
1. Seed your lawn with a resistant endophyte-enhanced grass. Check the grass seed label for this special variety.
2. Apply de-icing salt sparingly around lawn areas. Use substitutes such as sand or cat litter. Reseed the lawn if areas appear thin from exposure to deicing salt.
3. Fence off a separate area off and replace the grass with rocks if you have dogs. Allow them to use only this area instead of your lawn for urinating.
4. Place a supplement that changes the nitrogen concentration in your dog's urine in the dog's water or food.
5. Water lawn areas well after your dog urinates to dilute the nitrogen, using a hose or sprinklers. Diluting the nitrogen turns it into a beneficial fertilizer and keeps your grass green.
