Condition Laws and regulations On Shipping Farming Items To Hawaii

There are state laws on shipping agricultural products to Hawaii.

Hawaii has very strict rules regarding what agricultural products can be shipped into the state. The Hawaii state legislature considers plants, plant parts, animals, microorganisms, cultures and soil as "agricultural items." All these items must be declared on a "Plants and Animals Declaration" form and inspected upon arrival at an agriculture inspection center. All plants must be free from soil, pests and diseases to be allowed into Hawaii.

Restricted Plants

To bring any restricted plants to Hawaii, a person must have prior approval, permits, proof of quarantine and certifications. The following plants are restricted: pineapple and bromeliad plants, passion fruit plants and seeds, corn on the cob, citrus and pulpy fruits from Florida or Puerto Rico, taro and dasheen, coconuts, orchids, coffee plants and plant parts, palm plants, aster, chrysanthemums, hollyhock, dahlia, pine plants, sorghum, broomcorn and sundan grass.

Food Guidelines

Any cooked, canned, frozen or commercially processed foods are allowed in the state, as long as they come from the United States. Frozen or chilled meats from the mainland are also approved. Manufactured food products do not need to be declared or inspected.

Animal Guidelines

A failure to comply with the rules regarding animals can result in three years in prison and up to $500,000 in fines. All dogs and cats must be quarantined to ensure they are not infected with rabies. Several animals are on an "approved" list, including guinea pigs, domesticated rats and mice, chinchillas, turtles and certain aquarium fish. These animals do not need special quarantines or permits. Live shellfish that will be eaten are permitted. Domestic rabbits do not need an import permit, but they will need a health certificate within seven days of arrival. There are exceptions to the animal guidelines when the animals will be used for research at universities or government agencies, when they will be exhibited at zoos and government-affiliated aquariums, and when they will be used for medical or scientific purposes.
