Do-it-yourself Plaster Block Wall

Plastering over a block wall is simple.

Installing plaster over a block wall is a simple project. The pores in the blocks make it easy for plaster to stick to the blocks, which eliminates a lot of the need for extensive prep work such as is necessary for plastering drywall or wood walls. This project is time intensive, and plastering an entire room will likely take about a week. Always wear appropriate safety gear, such as a dust mask and safety goggles, when working with plaster.

Instructions

1. Test the blocks for water absorption. Spray some water onto the blocks. If the water absorbs into the blocks, then the plaster will stick. If it does not, you will have to cover the blocks in metal lath mesh. Nail the lath in place to secure it against the wall.

2. Create a bond coat by adding one part Portland cement to two parts sand. Add enough water to give the mixture the consistency of thick paint. Add half a part of bonding agent to increase the bonding power of the mixture. Spray the mixture onto the block wall with a plaster gun. Allow the coat to dry until it is firm but still somewhat sticky.

3. Fill a shallow container with water. Mix in enough plaster to create a mixture that has the consistency of mud. The mixture should be pliable, but not runny.

4. Apply the plaster to the wall, working from the top down. Apply the plaster to a thickness of about ¼ inch. You can keep the plaster smooth or use a notched trowel to make it easier for the finish coat to stick to the base coat. Allow the plaster to wet cure. Spray the wall with water every two hours to keep it moist as it cures.

5. Apply the finish coat after about 12 hours. Use the smooth trowel to apply an additional 1/8 inch to ¼ inch thickness of plaster to the walls. As you place the plaster on the walls, use whatever texturing you want on the walls, such as swirls or spackling. Allow the plaster to wet cure for 12 hours, then dry for an additional 24 hours.
