DIY: Wall Rendering
Wall rendering refers to the application of a layer of material on a wall to render it smooth. This helps exterior walls become weatherproof and provides them with a fine finish or texture. Materials used in rendering can be anything from latex and cement to earthen plaster and masonry wall. After rendering, the wall may also be painted to make it look more presentable. Some also add small stones or clippings to add texture to the rendered wall.
Instructions
1. Use a wire brush to brush away loose paint, chips of old masonry, oil, dirt, lichen build-up and grease and to prepare the wall for rendering.
2. Put water inside an empty spray bottle. Spray water on the surface of the wall that will be rendered.
3. Mix the rendering material with water in a wheelbarrow. Use a shovel to mix the material as you add small amounts of water until you achieve a paste-like consistency. Use your shovel to pull the rendering mixture towards the middle of your wheelbarrow.
4. Continue turning the mixture as you add more water. The consistency should look sticky enough to be pasted on the wall or to sit on your trowel without running off. You can test the texture of your mixture by placing a few on your trowel and seeing if the mixture easily slides off during slight tilting.
5. Apply the rendering material directly to the wall with trowel. Smooth the material on the wall with your trowel in order to make an even coat with no visible seams or gaps. Use your straightedge to guide you in making clean and sharp corners as you continue spreading and applying the rendering material on your wall.
6. Spray more water on the rendered wall to keep the material from cracking or drying too fast. Leave the wall to dry for at least 24 hours before painting.
