Repair Plaster Chips on Corners
Drywall corners are made with a strip of metal or plastic called corner bead. Corner bead is a long strip with either a rounded or a 45 degree angle down the middle, which creates a sharp corner or rounded perfect corner. If you have damaged or chipped the corner you will have to scrape away all the plaster or drywall that covers the corner bead, repair or replace it, and patch the wall with joint compound or mud. When the repair is complete the area must be textured to match the existing wall before it is primed and painted.
Instructions
1. Use a 1½-inch drywall taping knife to scrape away the old drywall from the repair area. Peel off the old drywall just enough to expose the corner bead. Once the drywall is removed and the corner bead is visible, use the drywall taping knife in up and down motions to scrape off any loose drywall edges. Use a hammer to gently tap the corner bead as straight as you can get it to create a sharp square edge. Continue these steps until all the damage is completely exposed, hammered, and scraped clean.
2. Use a drill to re-tighten any loose drywall screws in the corner bead. Add additional drywall screws with a drill to reinforce and secure the corner bead.
3. Mix the 45 minute drywall mud with a taping knife and water in a mud pan according to the directions on the label. Mix only as much as you need for the repair.
4. Use a 6-inch drywall taping knife to apply drywall mud to the repair area from the nose of the bead, then moving toward the wall. Apply the drywall mud to be level with the existing wall. Let the mud dry for 45 minutes or until completely dry. Use the 6-inch taping knife and scrape the dry mud in up and down motions until you have made a sharp corner. Add a second coat of drywall mud using up and down motions, keeping the corner sharp and straight. Let it dry thoroughly.
5. Use a wet cloth to feather the edges of the patch by rubbing all the patch edges until it blends with the existing wall. This is done in place of sanding to preserve the texture of the existing wall surface. Spray the patch with canned wall texture to match the rest of the wall. Let it dry thoroughly before priming and painting the wall.
