Install Tongue & Groove Wall Boards

Tongue and groove wall boards are available in a few forms. You can purchase them in narrow planks that are 3 to 8 feet long. You also can buy wall board material in 4-foot by 8-foot sheets. Use the material that makes the most sense for your project. The installation method is the same. The form of wall boards purchased also dictates the material of the wall boards. Narrow planks can be solid wood or a manmade material. Solid wood can be stained, while manmade materials can be painted.

Instructions

1. Measure the total height and width of the wall to find the total area of the wall using a tape measure. Multiply these numbers together to determine the total square footage of the wall.

2. Determine the width and the height of any fixed objects (such as a fireplace or windows) that will stay in place on the wall. Multiply these numbers together to find the total square footage of the fixed objects.

3. Subtract the size of the fixed objects from the wall size. This number represents the total amount of wall boards that will be required to cover the wall.

4. Begin installing the wall boards at one corner of the wall. Cut the first wall board to length using a miter saw, if required. Squeeze a line of construction adhesive down the length of the wall board using a caulking gun and place the glued side of the board on the wall.

5. Face the grooved side of the first wall board toward the corner. The tongue side of the board should face the opposite direction. Tack the board into place with a pneumatic brad nailer or finish nailer. The nails only need to be 1 inch to 1-1/4 inch long.

6. Repeat the process, cutting the boards to length as needed. Never allow end joints to line up with each other. Let the adhesive dry completely before hanging anything on the wall.
