Install Sheetrock Over Cinder Block

Improve the look of concrete walls with drywall.

Cement or cinder blocks provide sturdy, long-lasting walls. However, in finished home construction, they can give a room an institutional appearance. They also require a large amount of preparation and paint to achieve a smooth surface. Finishing the wall with sheetrock, also known as drywall or gyp board, can save time and money on paint and finish materials. If regular framing studs are used instead of furring strips, it also provides a gap in which to hide interior wiring and plumbing.

Instructions

1. Measure and mark the top and bottom of each block wall in 16-inch increments.

2. Snap a chalk line between each top and bottom mark. These lines mark the centers for mounting your studs or strips.

3. Measure and mark a spot 1 inch above the floor on both lower corners of the wall. Place a mark 1 inch below the ceiling in both corners of the wall.

4. Snap a chalk line between the marks near the floor. Snap another line between the marks below the ceiling.

5. Use a masonry bit to drill holes no more than 24 inches apart along each chalk line.

6. Starting with the bottom of the wall, line up the stud or strip with the chalk line. Mark the position of the anchor holes on the board. Use a wood-drilling bit to place mounting holes for the bolts in your boards.

7. Press the anchor shields into the holes in the blocks. Place the anchor bolts through the board. Place the boards in position and screw the bolts into the anchor shields.

8. Continue securing the boards to the walls. After fastening the bottom boards, proceed to the top boards. Attach the vertical strips last.

9. Secure the drywall to the furring strips or studs with drywall screws.
