Fastening Foam Sections To Cinderblock Walls

Insulating basement walls saves money from cold-weather heating costs. Fastening foam insulation to the cinder block walls of the basement helps in sealing the edges of the insulation, and making a proper seal increases the overall efficiency of the insulation. The basement walls must be sealed against moisture and physically dry before applying the adhesive. All adhesives are different, and the various application methods are on each individual name brand's directions.

Instructions

1. Wear the dust mask. Wipe the basement walls down with a broom. Adhesives will not bond properly unless the wall surface is clean and free of debris. In some cases, basement walls with flaking paint or chalk type materials require the use of a wire brush to remove all interfering debris.

2. Measure the wall surface for the first piece of foam insulation. If the panel is too large, transfer the correct measurements to the foam panel.

3. Cut the panel to size using the razor knife. Brush the cut edge with your hand to remove loose foam-particles.

4. Test fit the foam panel onto the basement wall. It is better to "dry-fit" the panel before applying the foam adhesive.

5. Remove the "dry-fit" panel from the wall. Lay the foam panel flat. Apply the adhesive to the panel. Follow label directions for your particular adhesive product.

6. Lift the panel, adhesive side up. Set adhesive side of the foam panel against the basement wall. Press the panel with your hands. Smooth out the face of the panel to increase contact with adhesive to the cinder block wall.

7. Repeat above steps for each foam panel.
