Cover the flooring beneath the antique plaster walls with heavy-duty fabric drop cloths.
If you need to remove peeling and flaking paint from antique plaster walls, you must use specific techniques and instruments that will remove the old paint without causing damage in the process. Because antique plaster walls are more sensitive than newer, modern walls comprised of sheetrock, you must use great care, or you may gouge chunks free and create abrasion scars that could show through the new finish coat.
Instructions
1. Cover the flooring beneath the antique plaster walls with heavy-duty fabric drop cloths.
2. Scrape away large, loose flakes of paint using a plastic putty knife.
3. Load a palm sander with 220-grit sandpaper.
4. Remove any remaining chipping or flaking paint from the antique plaster using the palm sander.
5. Remove the 220-grit sandpaper form the palm sander, and replace it with 400-grit sandpaper. Smooth any rough areas of the plaster using the sander.
6. Gather the drop cloths and dispose of the paint chips in your usual garbage.
7. Remove any remaining bits of old paint from flooring using a shop vacuum.
