Install An Mdf Beadboard

MDF beadboard has made installing beadboard walls easier than traditional beadboard. Traditional beadboard is installed in several small strips, whereas MDF beadboard can be installed in large sheets that are easily glued and nailed into place. Most homeowners can install MDF beadboard when they learn where to start.

Instructions

1. Remove the existing trim and baseboards from the room with a hammer and pry bar. Remove carefully to avoid cracking or breaking the trim. Set the molding aside for re-installation after the beadboard is installed.

2. Turn off the power to the room. Carefully unscrew the outlet and light switch plates from the electrical outlets. Set the plates aside for re-installation.

3. Find the studs in the wall with a stud finder. Mark the wall where the studs are located with a pencil.

4. Decide how high the beadboard is to be installed on the wall. Measure wall with measuring tape. Mark height of the beadboard on the wall with a pencil.

5. Place 1/4-inch MDF beadboard panel backside-up on the floor or a workbench. Measure the beadboard panel to size.

6. Cut the beadboard with a table saw. Place the beadboard on the saw and run it though the saw at the marked measurements.

7. Cut out spaces for the electrical outlets with a jig saw. Start the jig saw by drilling a small hole into the corner of the cutout. Once the hole is made, place the jig saw into the beadboard and finish cutting out the hole.

8. Apply paneling adhesive to the back of the MDF beadboard in an "S" pattern. Place the paneling on the wall and apply pressure to panel. Leave a 1/4-inch gap between the paneling and the floor to allow for expansion. Use wood shims to hold the paneling in place above the floor until you nail it into place.

9. Nail the paneling into place with a nail gun. Nail the paneling into the marked studs where possible.

10. Install a chair rail above the MDF beadboard. Cut corner pieces on a miter saw set at a 45-degree angle. Nail the chair rail into place above the beadboard with a nail gun.

11. Re-install the baseboard molding to the bottom of the room.

12. Fill nail holes with drywall putty. Allow the putty to dry. Paint the beadboard and chair rail.
