You have a section of floor that is a 1/2-inch lower that must meet another floor that is already finished. You don't want to remove any finished flooring, but you're not sure what to do about the change in elevation. Applying floor leveler, or floor leveling compound, is an easy solution if the floor covering is moderately flexible.
Instructions
1. Buy some floor leveling compound appropriate for the type of floor to which you will apply it. Be sure to read the label for any suggested tools and safety equipment that the brand of floor leveler recommends.
2. Clean and dry the floor to which you will apply the leveler. It is important that dust or debris does not interfere with the adherence of the floor leveling compound.
3. Protect your hands by wearing rubber gloves. Protect your clothing, or wear old clothes to do this job.
4. Spread a layer of floor leveler at the base of the lowest part with the flat edge of a trowel. Use a build-up technique to apply layers of the compound.
5. Allow the compound to dry thoroughly.
6. Sand any rough spots to make a smooth finish to the floor. Sweep up and dispose of any debris left from sanding.
7. Apply the floor covering. Floor coverings that will work well over floor leveling compound are linoleum, carpeting, vinyl tile, small ceramic tile or high quality laminate flooring.
