A small hole in drywall can be patched by a homeowner.
A door flung back too enthusiastically or an errant indoor soccer kick can result in an unsightly hole in your drywall. There is no need to panic, a small- to moderate-size hole in a wall can be patched with by a homeowner with basic DIY skills. Larger holes sometime require more work or the need to cut out more drywall and replace it with new drywall.
Instructions
1. Cut off any rough or uneven edges around the hole with a utility knife to prepare the hole for patching.
2. Cut a piece of drywall mesh to fit the hole. Trim the mesh with scissors, allowing 1 to 2 inches larger all around than the diameter of the hole.
3. Place the mesh over the hole, holding it in place with your hand, if it is not adhesive backed. Scoop out some joint compound with a putty knife and smooth it over the mesh, pressing slightly to force it through the mesh where it rests against the wall. Smooth it out as much as you can with the putty knife, while making sure the area is covered well.
4. Allow the compound to dry. This can take several hours.
5. Sand the dry joint compound down as smooth as possible with a sanding block. Apply more putty to any low spots, let dry and resand until smooth.
