Make Home Putting Vegetables

Add a practice putting green to a home landscape with a little effort.

Practice opportunities improve for busy golfers with the addition of a home putting green. Synthetic grass surfaces reduce the amount of effort required to maintain the green and increase the time available for practicing a few putts. The amount of effort required to create a home putting green varies with the size of the project, but falls within the capabilities of most home do-it-yourselfers, although commercial installation is available.

Instructions

1. Excavate the existing sod and dirt to a depth of about 4 inches. Sod cutters, available from rental stores, remove the sod most efficiently, although a shovel and wheelbarrow will also work. Compact the excavated area with a vibrating plate tamper, also available at a rental store.

2. Add about 2 inches sand or decomposed granite to the excavated area. Rake the materials smooth and level allowing a slope of 1 inch for every 100 inches of distance for drainage. Compact the materials using the vibrating plate tamper.

3. Add another 2 inches sand or decomposed granite to the area. Again rake it level and compact with a vibrating plate tamper. Sufficiently compacted materials do not form a visible footprint when walked on.

4. Place a fabric weed barrier over the sand base. Fasten it in place using sod staples.

5. Dig in the holes. Excavate a space deep enough the metal or plastic cup and about 2 inches larger in diameter. Place the cup in the excavation and pack the sand or decomposed granite around it.

6. Place the artificial turf over the sand base. Work out any creases or irregularities in the turf by pressing or rolling the turf towards the edges. Tape together any seams using seam tape. Trim the turf to the shape and size of the excavation.

7. Nail the turf in place by driving a 5- or 6-inch nail through the turf every 6 inches around the perimeter. Add landscaping stones or other border elements around the edge of the putting green.

8. Infill the putting green with sand. Infill sand fills the lower portion of the artificial grass turf. creating a short stubble of plastic grass similar to a natural grass putting green. Disperse the sand with a fertilizer spreader and rake or sweep it into place. Fill and sweep the sand until 1/32 inch of plastic turf remains free.

9. Use a knife or scissors to cut through the turf to expose the cups placed earlier.
